The Brazilian Association of Intensive Medicine (AMIB) recently published the AMIB Census 2024, which provides an excellent description of the profile of healthcare professionals and services in Brazil’s intensive care units over the past decade (2014 to 2024). The current scenario presents complex challenges for managers of intensive care units located in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, given the evident concentration of beds and specialized professionals in the South and Southeast regions. In contexts of limited human, technological, and material resources, a frequent question that ICU managers have been asking is: “What influence can the profile of professionals working in intensive care have on outcomes for critically ill patients, and what management strategies can be used to achieve good results despite these limitations?” The process of implementing tools that can modify outcomes in scenarios with limited resources thus hinges on co-participative management strategies, where employees gain motivation by having a voice in the direction of actions defined by upper management, being heard and valued in their demands, and also through the implementation of ongoing education programs.
