Effects of the dash diet and vegetarian diet on blood pressure in hypertensive patients: a literature review

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the characteristics and results of DASH and vegetarian diets in the treatment of HTN.  Methodology: We conducted a literature review to assess the effects of DASH and vegetarian diets on HTN. Exclusion criteria included duplicate articles, monographs, dissertations, and theses. Results: The DASH diet is characterized by low sodium intake and high potassium and magnesium consumption, showing positive effects in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure, thus proving its efficacy in blood pressure control. The vegetarian diet, richer in fiber and omega-3, also demonstrated positive effects in reducing blood pressure and a lower prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. Conclusion: Both diets are promising for hypertension management, requiring adaptations to meet individual needs.
