Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Nail Orthoses in the Treatment of People with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of nail orthoses in the treatment of nail plate deformities in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Method: A comparative cohort study conducted with individuals treated at a specialized outpatient clinic who presented nail alterations such as ingrown toenails and pincer or tile-shaped nails. Two types of nail orthoses were analyzed: molecular memory fiber (MMF) and elastic, applied alternately to the patients. Nail plate measurements were performed using a digital caliper at different points of the nail (proximal, medial, and distal) over a 60-day period. Results: Both orthoses proved effective in correcting nail curvature. The elastic orthosis performed better in the proximal region, whereas the MMF orthosis was more effective in the medial and distal regions. Additionally, participants reported pain relief and improved nail plate quality. Conclusions: The choice of orthosis should consider the location of the deformity, with professional follow-up being necessary to select the most appropriate device. Furthermore, patient adherence to treatment and home care is crucial. Further studies are recommended to deepen the understanding of the large-scale application of these techniques.
