Relationship between vitamin D deficiency, risk of dysphagia and sarcopenia in older women

Objective: to relate hypovitaminosis D, sarcopenia and dysphagia in elderly women. Methods: cross-sectional and descriptive study with a quantitative approach, with 168 participants undergoing physical tests, anthropometric assessment, biochemical examinations and assessment instruments. The EAT10 (Eating Assessment Tool) was used to identify the risk of dysphagia. The risk of sarcopenia was identified using the SARC -(Simple Questionnaire to Rapidly Diagnose Sarcopenia) questionnaire and assessed according to the Revised European Consensus criteria. To classify nutritional status, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used. Statistical analyzes were processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, version 22.0). Results: 19.6% of the sample had sarcopenia, 40.5% risk of dysphagia and 16.7% hypovitaminosis D. A relationship was observed between hypovitaminosis D and the risk of dysphagia (p=0.049), however, there was no significant association with sarcopenia. There was a positive association between vitamin D deficiency and malnutrition or nutritional risk and edentulism. Conclusion: elderly women with hypovitaminosis D were at risk of dysphagia, malnutrition or nutritional risk and edentulism, without association with sarcopenia.
